Industry: Pet Food E-commerce
Business Type: Online Pet Food Store
Project Duration: 6 Months
Client: Withheld under NDA
My Role: SEO Consultant & E-commerce SEO Strategist
Services: E-commerce SEO, Technical SEO, Keyword Research, On-Page SEO, Content Strategy, Internal Linking, Conversion SEO
Executive Summary
This SEO case study explains how I worked with an e-commerce pet food brand to improve its search visibility, strengthen website structure, and create a more effective organic growth system.
The client had a growing online store with a strong range of pet nutrition products. However, the website was not fully capturing the search demand of potential customers because the SEO strategy was mainly focused around products rather than the complete customer journey.
Pet owners usually do not start their buying journey by searching only for product names. They often begin with questions and problems:
- What is the best food for my puppy?
- Which cat food is suitable for sensitive digestion?
- What ingredients should I avoid?
- Which nutrition product is suitable for senior pets?
My objective was not simply to increase rankings. The goal was to build a complete search visibility system where customers could discover the brand at different stages of their buying journey.
The strategy connected:
Customer Problem → Helpful Content → Category Page → Product Page → Purchase Decision
The project focused on improving technical foundations, optimizing commercial pages, creating useful content, strengthening internal linking, and improving how search engines and customers understood the website.
About The Client
The client was an online pet food retailer selling nutrition products for dogs and cats.
The product catalogue included:
- Dog food
- Puppy food
- Cat food
- Kitten food
- Premium nutrition products
- Special dietary pet food
- Health-focused pet products
The business had invested in building its product range, but organic search growth required a stronger SEO foundation to compete in a highly competitive e-commerce environment.
For this type of website, I approached SEO through a complete
e-commerce SEO strategy
rather than treating each product page as an isolated ranking opportunity.
The SEO Challenge
Limited Visibility for Non-Branded Searches
The website had opportunities to capture more non-branded searches from customers who were actively researching pet food solutions.
Examples included:
- Best puppy food
- Premium cat food
- Grain-free dog food
- Food for sensitive stomach dogs
- Healthy pet nutrition options
The challenge was helping search engines understand the relationship between customer needs, product categories, and individual products.
Product Pages Needed Stronger Search Intent Alignment
Many e-commerce websites make the mistake of treating product pages as simple product descriptions.
However, customers need more information before making a purchase decision.
A strong product page should answer:
- Who is this product for?
- What problem does it solve?
- What makes it different?
- Why should customers trust it?
- How does it compare with alternatives?
Category Pages Were Not Fully Used as SEO Assets
Category pages are often some of the most valuable pages for e-commerce websites because they target broader commercial searches.
Instead of only displaying products, category pages should help customers understand their options while providing clear relevance signals to search engines.
Initial SEO Audit Findings
Before making changes, I started with a detailed
SEO audit
to identify technical problems, content gaps, keyword opportunities, and areas where the website was losing potential visibility.
Technical SEO Issues
The technical review focused on:
- Crawling and indexing
- Website architecture
- XML sitemap review
- Canonical signals
- Duplicate URLs
- Internal linking structure
- Mobile usability
- Page performance
Technical SEO was important because search engines need clear signals about which pages matter, how pages connect, and which URLs should be indexed.
I reviewed the website using a practical
technical SEO approach
focused on fixing issues that could actually impact search visibility.
Content and Keyword Gaps
The website had product information, but there was an opportunity to create more content around customer questions and buying decisions.
The keyword strategy was not based only on search volume. I focused on:
- Search intent
- Commercial value
- Customer problems
- Product relationships
- Buying journey stages
Project Goals
The main objectives of the SEO project were:
- Improve organic visibility for relevant pet food searches
- Create stronger product and category page relevance
- Improve technical SEO foundations
- Build topical authority around pet nutrition
- Create better connections between content and products
- Improve the path from search visitor to customer
SEO Strategy Overview
My approach followed a structured SEO framework:
Business Goals → Research → Search Demand → Search Intent → Technical Foundation → Content → Internal Linking → Authority → Conversion
I did not treat SEO as only a ranking activity. The focus was creating a website that helps:
- Search engines understand the business
- Customers find relevant products
- Users make confident buying decisions

Results & Business Impact
Client identity has been protected under NDA.
As this project is covered by a confidentiality agreement, specific business-sensitive information such as client name, website details, revenue data, and private analytics screenshots are not publicly disclosed.
The focus of this case study is the SEO process, strategic decisions, and implementation approach used to improve the website’s search visibility and organic growth foundation.
SEO Growth Improvements
Through the implementation of technical SEO improvements, product optimization, content strategy, and internal linking improvements, the website developed a stronger foundation for sustainable organic visibility.
The major improvements included:
- Better understanding of website structure by search engines
- Improved relevance between search queries and website pages
- Stronger product and category page optimization
- Improved connection between educational content and commercial pages
- Better user navigation throughout the buying journey
Improved Search Visibility Structure
Before the SEO improvements, the website mainly depended on individual product discovery.
The new approach created multiple entry points:
- Educational searches
- Product category searches
- Specific product searches
- Comparison-based searches
- Problem-based searches
This created a stronger search ecosystem where users could discover the brand at different stages of their decision-making process.
Better Customer Journey From Search To Purchase
The SEO strategy was designed around the complete customer journey:
Search Query → Helpful Answer → Relevant Category → Product Selection → Purchase Decision
Instead of focusing only on bringing visitors, the strategy focused on attracting users with genuine purchase intent.
What Made The Biggest Difference?
The biggest difference came from changing the way SEO was approached.
The website was not treated as only an online product catalogue.
It was developed as a complete search visibility system.
Pet owners do not always search directly for products. They often search for solutions, advice, comparisons, and recommendations before buying.
By understanding these search behaviours, I was able to create a strategy that connected useful information with commercial opportunities.
Key SEO Learnings From This Project
SEO Is More Than Keyword Placement
A successful e-commerce SEO strategy requires understanding:
- Customer problems
- Search intent
- Product relationships
- Website architecture
- User experience
Product Pages Need To Build Trust
For e-commerce websites, product pages are not only ranking pages.
They are decision-making pages.
Customers need confidence before purchasing, especially in industries like pet nutrition where product choices affect animal health and wellbeing.
Content Should Support Business Goals
Publishing more content is not always the answer.
The important question is:
Does this content help the customer and support the business?
The strongest content strategy connects educational resources with relevant products and services.
My SEO Approach
I do not treat SEO as a checklist of technical tasks or keyword placements.
My approach is focused on building search visibility systems that help businesses become easier to find, easier to understand, and easier to trust.
For every project, I focus on:
- Understanding the business model
- Researching customer search behaviour
- Finding realistic growth opportunities
- Improving technical foundations
- Creating useful content
- Building strong website relationships
- Connecting SEO with business goals
